Move by dragging

Moving the data in a cell or a range is common. For example, you may need to relocate a range of data to make room for something else.

Or you just may have plunked down some data in the wrong place. It happens.

Moving works on the same principle as copying.

Moving cells is a very common spreadsheet operation, and several methods of moving are allowed.

You can do any of the following:

Move one cell to another cell.

Move a range to another range.

Move a cell or range to another worksheet or workbook.

Move a Cell to Another Cell

You can decide to move the contents of only one cell to another cell. This is easy to do.

To move the contents of one cell to another cell, follow these steps:

1. Move the cell pointer to the cell to be moved.

2. Click the Cut button on the Standard toolbar.

Microsoft Word Help: Copy button Cut button

Or you can choose Edit ► Cut from the menu bar.

Or you can press CTRL + X.

3. Select the cell where you want to move the contents to.

4. Press Enter.

Or you can click the Paste button on the Standard toolbar.

Microsoft Word Help: Paste button Paste button

Or you can choose Edit ► Paste from the menu bar.

Or you can press CTRL + V.

If the range that you're moving contains formulas that refer to other cells, the references continue to refer to the original cells.

You almost always want references to continue to refer to the original cells.

Excel Office Helper  WARNING!

When you move data, make sure that there are enough blank cells to hold it. Excel overwrites existing data without warning.

Excel Office Helper  If you change your mind after issuing the Cut command, press Esc to cancel the operation.

If you change your mind after you're already moved the data, choose Edit
 ►Undo Paste or press Ctrl+ Z.
